Ms
Jasenka Gojšić, CARNet CEO: Information technologies are modern, flexible
and individual-oriented tools and therefore ideal for a modern and more
efficient education.
1. How long have you been CARNet CEO and how do you like it so far?
I have been CARNet CEO for a little longer than a year. Answering a
question like that is pretty hard. I can not say that I am delighted
with the situation at that moment. When I arrived, the situation was
not so bad but unfortunately it was also the start of the overall recession.
However, we decided that we will do our best with the equipment and
human resources at our disposal. As always, there are two sides to every
story. The situation forced us to think well before we act, carefully
plan and coordinate every step which will I hope optimize our activities,
And that is the challenge I see laying before us.
2. Why did CARNet
start such a conference?
Conference may not be the best term for what we are trying to do here.
Conference suggests lectures, passive listeners exposed to intelligent
contents. All that usually ends with the closing of the particular conference.
Our conference should be a big workshop, with long term results. This
year's topic is more efficient learning with the help of the Internet.
In my opinion, the greatest advantage the Internet has to offer is the
speed and simplicity of obtaining information as opposed to investing
a lot of time in creating something brand new. Information technologies
are modern, flexible and individual-oriented tools and therefore ideal
for a modern and more efficient education.
Although we are talking about something fairly new, our users might
start mentoring over the network very soon. At this conference we have
assembled 200 qualified users willing to revolutionize and change the
traditional educational system. This conference will gather people from
different fields and give them the opportunity to share experience,
ideas and knowledge.
I often hear people saying that there is not enough money to create
quality multimedia material, and that may well be so, but to say that
we cannot invest some efforts in the selection and adoption of the already
existing material is not quite true.
3. This is the
first CARNet Users Conference. Do you expect more conferences of that
type in the near future?
There is no need to hold more than one CARNet conference
per year. Taking into account the scope and international character
of CUC'99 and our wish to be present in other conferences and events
in Croatia and aboard, the overall situation in the field of science
and technology in Croatia I am positive that CARNet will have only one
conference a year for years to come.
4. What would
you like to say to the participants of CUC'99?
I would like to ask them to actively participate in all sessions at
the Conference and cooperate with their colleagues, exchange ideas,
experience and find solutions to their problems in an inspiring and
stimulative atmosphere.
5. What do you
expect from this conference?
I would like for the conference to be successful to the extent that
every participant leaves it with the feeling that he has learnt something
new and useful and had a perfect time.
